ABOUT THE PROJECT

Every January, the Service Learning 105 class travels to Mexico and engages in educational and volunteer efforts in the community. In preparation for the trip, students organize fundraising projects along with the Niņos de Veracruz non-profit organization, and other campus groups. In 2006 the money raised went to purchase 300 books, a bookcase, and library supplies for a rural elementary school. The following year fundraising efforts allowed the class to buy a collection of books and audiovisual materials for an orphanage for young boys.

CONTINUING EFFORTS

The Brennan Library accepts donations of books and movies on an ongoing basis to support our efforts to promote literacy in Mexico.

We have teamed up with Better World Books, a company that sells materials using online vendors such as Half.com and Ebay on behalf of libraries. They will sell and ship items for us, and a portion of the proceeds will be earmarked for our fund to assist our partner communities in Mexico. In addition, Better World Books will donate a portion of the proceeds to Books for Africa.

The library also has books for sale on a cart near the main entrance. Books cost $0.50 each or 4 for $1.00 and the money goes toward promoting literacy in Mexico.
